Gender and Climate Change Adaptation Course

Introduction

Climate change is not gender-neutral, and its impacts are deeply shaped by existing inequalities in access to resources, decision-making power, and resilience capacities. This course on Gender and Climate Change Adaptation equips participants with the knowledge to understand these differentiated impacts and design inclusive adaptation strategies that protect the most vulnerable populations.

The program explores how climate-related risks such as droughts, floods, food insecurity, and displacement affect women, men, girls, and boys differently. It highlights the social, economic, and cultural factors that increase vulnerability and limit adaptive capacity, while also identifying opportunities for inclusive resilience building.

Participants will examine the role of gender in natural resource management, agriculture, water access, and disaster risk reduction. The course emphasizes how empowering women and marginalized groups in these sectors leads to stronger, more effective, and more sustainable climate adaptation outcomes at community and national levels.

A strong focus is placed on policy integration, ensuring that gender considerations are embedded in national climate change strategies, environmental governance frameworks, and international agreements. Participants will learn how to align local interventions with global commitments such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The course also addresses emerging issues such as climate migration, climate-induced conflict, green economy transitions, and climate finance access. It critically examines how unequal access to funding and technology can widen existing gender gaps unless deliberately addressed through inclusive planning.

Ultimately, this course builds capacity for practitioners, policymakers, and development actors to design gender-responsive climate adaptation programs. It promotes resilience, equity, and sustainability by ensuring that no group is left behind in the face of escalating climate risks.
