Gender and Social Norms Transformation Course
Introduction
Gender and social norms play a powerful role in shaping behaviors, opportunities, and access to resources across societies. Deeply rooted beliefs about roles, responsibilities, and expectations often reinforce inequality and limit progress toward inclusive development. This course equips participants with advanced knowledge and practical tools to understand, analyze, and transform harmful gender and social norms that hinder equality and sustainable development outcomes.
Social norms are often invisible yet highly influential drivers of inequality, affecting decision-making at individual, community, institutional, and policy levels. Many development interventions fail because they do not address these underlying norms that sustain discrimination and exclusion. This course addresses this gap by enabling participants to identify, map, and challenge restrictive norms using evidence-based and participatory approaches.
The program provides a strong foundation in behavioral and social change theories, enabling participants to design interventions that shift attitudes, beliefs, and practices over time. Participants will explore frameworks for norm change, including social behavior change communication, community dialogue approaches, and transformative programming models that promote equity and inclusion.
A key focus of the course is understanding how gender norms intersect with culture, religion, economics, and governance systems. Participants will examine how these intersections shape inequality and how targeted interventions can disrupt harmful practices while promoting positive social transformation. Emphasis is placed on culturally sensitive and context-specific strategies that ensure sustainable change.
The course also explores the role of institutions, media, education systems, and community leadership in reinforcing or transforming social norms. Participants will gain insights into how to design multi-level interventions that engage key influencers such as men, boys, religious leaders, educators, and policymakers in advancing gender equality and social inclusion.
By the end of the program, participants will be able to design and implement effective social norms transformation strategies that promote equitable behaviors and attitudes. They will be equipped to lead change processes that challenge discrimination, strengthen community resilience, and advance inclusive and sustainable development.
