Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention, Response and Survivor Support Systems Course

Introduction

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally, affecting individuals across all ages, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of GBV, its root causes, and its far-reaching consequences on individuals, families, and communities. Participants will explore the structural inequalities, harmful social norms, and systemic gaps that perpetuate violence, while gaining practical knowledge on prevention and response mechanisms that can drive lasting change.

The course emphasizes a survivor-centered and rights-based approach to GBV prevention and response. Participants will learn how to design and implement interventions that prioritize dignity, safety, confidentiality, and empowerment of survivors. It highlights the importance of ethical considerations, trauma-informed care, and culturally sensitive practices when working with survivors in diverse contexts. Real-life case studies and practical tools will be used to strengthen participants’ ability to respond effectively.

Prevention is a key pillar in addressing GBV, and this course equips participants with strategies to challenge harmful gender norms and promote behavioral change. It examines community engagement approaches, advocacy campaigns, and education programs that foster gender equality and reduce the risk of violence. Participants will learn how to engage men and boys, strengthen community structures, and build resilience to prevent GBV before it occurs.

Effective response systems require coordinated, multi-sectoral approaches involving health, legal, psychosocial, and protection services. This course provides insights into building and strengthening referral pathways and survivor support systems. Participants will gain skills in case management, service coordination, and inter-agency collaboration to ensure survivors receive comprehensive and timely assistance tailored to their needs.

Emerging trends such as online and technology-facilitated GBV, crisis-related violence, and the intersection of GBV with displacement, climate change, and pandemics are also addressed. The course integrates innovative approaches, including digital tools for reporting and support, data-driven programming, and evidence-based interventions. Participants will be prepared to adapt GBV programs to evolving risks and complex humanitarian and development settings.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and evaluate GBV prevention and response programs. Whether working in government, NGOs, humanitarian agencies, or community organizations, participants will be empowered to contribute to safer environments, stronger support systems, and sustainable solutions that uphold the rights and dignity of survivors.
