Gender in Humanitarian Response and Emergency Course

Introduction

Humanitarian emergencies driven by conflict, natural disasters, or complex crises affect populations differently based on gender, age, disability, and other intersecting factors. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how gender shapes vulnerability, resilience, and access to humanitarian assistance. It equips participants with the skills to design and implement gender-responsive emergency interventions that are inclusive, equitable, and effective.

In crisis settings, pre-existing gender inequalities are often amplified, exposing women, men, girls, and boys to different risks and protection concerns. This course explores how social norms, power relations, and structural inequalities influence humanitarian outcomes. Participants will learn how to conduct gender analysis in emergencies to ensure that responses address the specific needs and capacities of all affected groups.

The course emphasizes global humanitarian standards and frameworks that guide gender mainstreaming in emergency response, including the Sphere Standards, IASC Gender Handbook, and Protection principles. Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to integrate gender considerations into all phases of the humanitarian program cycle, from preparedness and assessment to response and recovery.

A key focus is placed on gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response in emergencies, which remains a critical protection concern in crisis contexts. The course provides tools for designing survivor-centered interventions, establishing referral pathways, and ensuring safe access to services. Participants will also explore safeguarding mechanisms and accountability systems in humanitarian operations.

Emerging issues such as climate-induced displacement, pandemics, digital humanitarian tools, and localization of aid are integrated into the course content. These topics highlight the evolving nature of humanitarian work and the importance of adaptive, gender-responsive approaches. Participants will examine how innovation and technology can improve inclusion and effectiveness in emergency settings.

Through practical case studies, simulations, and participatory exercises, participants will develop the ability to apply gender-responsive approaches in real-world humanitarian contexts. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to lead inclusive emergency responses that protect dignity, promote equality, and enhance resilience among affected populations.
