Introduction
Outcome Harvesting and Outcome Mapping are advanced Monitoring and Evaluation approaches that focus on identifying, understanding, and verifying changes influenced by projects and programs rather than only tracking planned activities. These methods are especially valuable in complex environments where outcomes are non-linear, dynamic, and influenced by multiple actors. This course equips participants with practical skills to apply these innovative evaluation approaches effectively.
Traditional M&E systems often struggle to capture unintended or emergent outcomes that arise during project implementation. Outcome Mapping and Outcome Harvesting provide flexible, learning-oriented frameworks that allow organizations to document real changes, whether expected or unexpected. This course introduces participants to these methodologies and how they enhance adaptive learning and evidence-based decision-making.
A key focus of this course is Outcome Mapping, which emphasizes behavioral change in boundary partners such as individuals, groups, and organizations. Participants will learn how to define vision statements, identify boundary partners, and develop progress markers that track incremental changes over time. This approach shifts focus from outputs to sustainable outcomes.
The course also explores Outcome Harvesting, a methodology used to collect evidence of what has changed and determine whether and how an intervention contributed to those changes. Participants will gain skills in designing harvesting questions, collecting credible evidence, and analyzing outcomes in complex project environments.
Another important component of the course is participatory evaluation and learning. Participants will learn how to engage stakeholders in identifying outcomes, validating evidence, and interpreting results. This strengthens ownership, accountability, and learning within programs and organizations.
Ultimately, this course prepares participants to become skilled evaluators capable of applying Outcome Harvesting and Outcome Mapping to complex development and humanitarian projects. By combining qualitative analysis, participatory methods, and adaptive learning approaches, participants will be able to generate deeper insights into real-world impact.
